4 Fire Emblem Characters In Super Smash Bros – Is That Too Many?
Fire Emblem Getting Super Smash Bros Love
I am a recent convert to the Fire Emblem series. Last years – Fire Emblem: Awakening for the Nintendo 3DS turned me into a massive fan of the franchise. With this said, the Fire Emblem series has never been a great seller in relative terms, especially when in comparison with Nintendo’s biggest franchises.
Considering Fire Emblem’s size as a franchise, it comes as a surprise that there will be four representatives from the series in Super Smash Bros For Wii U and 3DS. I was expecting 3 spots – with Marth, Ike and Lucina/chrome all making the final cut. However, Robin’s inclusion caught me completely off guard – I honestly did not expect a 4th Fire Emblem Character.
I’m all for some Fire Emblem love, in fact, Super Smash Bros For Wii U/3DS could be the perfect platform for the franchise to gain additional recognition amongst Nintendo fans and the masses in general, perhaps even growth in sales for future installments.
I have a lingering thought that simply cannot be shaken. I can’t help, but think that other Nintendo franchises deserve more representation in Super Smash Bros. Take an example, the Metroid series – a franchise that was born many years ago – beloved by almost every Nintendo fan. Unfortunately, for all its legacy, the Metroid Franchise has only had two confirmed characters joining the battle – Samus and her agile version – Zero Suit Samus. What makes things worse – is that fans have often asked Sakurai to include Ridley in the playable roster. I would like at least one more character from the Metroid Franchise to be included.
One could argue, that adding more characters from lesser known IP’s will help the popularity of the franchise in the future, much like the return of the Kid Icarus franchise, and the growth of Fire Emblem in the west. However, it would be such a shame that characters from other franchises were excluded for the sake that other series could see growth in sales. From a gamers perspective, I would like to play my favorite character from my favorite franchises. I would like a varied, fun and fair playable selection, which I am sure Sakurai will deliver.
Don’t get the wrong idea – I love the inclusion of Robin and Lucina, but to balance the roster – I sincerely hope that other Nintendo Franchises have fair representations in Super Smash Bros.
