Overview

Mega Evolutions are a newly introduced evolution form introduced in Pokémon X& Y. A mega evolution causes an aesthetic change to the respected Pokémon in addition to a boost in stats and in certain cases the Pokemon may be given a different ability and type combination.

What Are Mega Evolutions

Mega Evolution’s is a new evolution form introduced in Pokémon X&Y. Consequently, Mega evolutions can only be achieved in the Kalos region so therefore cannot be achieved in previous generations. Pokémon with mega evolution will receive a temporary aesthetic change with a boost in stats and may be given a new type combination and ability.

Mega Evolutions differ from a typical evolution as they are a temporary change of form which can only be achieved in battle.  In rare cases a Pokémon may have two evolutions.

Pokémon are titled with “Mega” in front of the name. For example, Mega Mewtwo and Mega Garchomp are the mega evolution of Mewtwo and Garchomp.

How are Mega Evolutions achieved?

The exact details on how to achieve a Mega Evolution are not fully known. However game freaks has provided some details on how to make a Pokémon achieve a Mega Evolution. To achieve a Mega Evolution you need at least to fulfil the following requisites.

Firstly, it is important to understand that not all Pokemon are able to achieve a Mega Evolution. Only a selected group of Pokemon will be able to Mega  Evolve.

In order to Mega Evolve a Pokémon, the respected Poke must be holding a Mega Stone or  Pokémon specific stone during the battle. As an example, a Lucario will be required to hold a Blazikenite to achieve a mega evolution.  Mewtwo is a rare case in that it has two mega forms – one specific to a version of Pokemon X & Y. Mewtwo can change into the first revealed form by holding Mewtwonite Y stone. For Mewtwo to achieve the second revealed form ( the Psychic/Fighting type) – it has to hold Mewtwonite X.

Unfortunately, holding a mega stone will not automatically grant a Pokémon the fabled evolution.  The Mega stone will need to connect to a special accessory called a Mega Ring which is a black bracelet that the trainer wears. The Mega Ring and the mega stone that the Pokemon is wearing will react to cause the mega evolution.

According to GameFreaks, the bond between Trainer and Pokemon is essential to promote a Mega Evolution. I am going to assume this will be similar to happiness evolution, by that I mean, building the rapport between trainer and Pokemon will be vital to achieve Mega Evolutions. This could be achieved through the new Super Training feature or even Pokemon Amie. Potentially, the bond can grow by traditional mean such as winning important gym battle, feeding the Pokemon the right foods or have it lead the party. (Please note, the above are unconfirmed and are only educated guess.)

Mega Venusaur

When Venusaur becomes Mega Venusaur, the flower on the Pokémon’s back blooms even more fantastically than before. Its legs and frame become more sturdy to support the weight of the huge flower.

Nintendo has confirmed that Mega Venusaur will gain a boost in its Special Defence and Defence stats. Mega Venusaur will also gain the ability “Thick Fat” which reduces the damage of Ice and Fire attack which subdues Venusaur’s previous weakness. With combination of the defence stat boosts and the ability thick fat – Mega Venusaur will be viable tank for any team out there.

 

 

Mega Charizard

When Charizard becomes Mega Charizard, its pointed horns and long tail give the Pokémon a look of sleek sharpness. Mega Charizard is in a league of its own when it comes to flying prowess, able to reach incredible heights.

Nintendo has confirmed that Mega Charizard will gain a Special attack stat boost. Furthermore, Mega Charizard will gain the ability Drought – a rare ability only shared by Crouldon and Dream World Ninetails. When Mega Charizard is sent to battle permanent Sun will be summoned giving fire attack’s an extra boost in potency.

 

 

Mega Blastoise

The two rocket launchers on Blastoise’s shoulders turn into a single huge cannon when it Mega Evolves into Mega Blastoise. This cannon boasts a blast range so great that it can strike targets more than six miles away!

Unfortunately, Nintendo has not mentioned what stats boost Mega Blastoise will receive. However, Mega Blastoise will get a brand new ability that is unique to the Pokemon. The ability is called “Mega Launcher” giving a boost in power of Pulse moves such as Dark Pulse and Water Pulse.  While other details were not given, Mega Blastoise does lookamazing with the large canon on the shell.

 

 

Mega Ampharos

When Ampharos Mega Evolves into Mega Ampharos, its head and tail are covered with white fur in this new, gallant appearance. When Ampharos undergoes Mega Evolution, it gains the Dragon type in addition to its original Electric type.

Mega Ampharos receives an amazing aesthetic change. The red orbs on the tail emit a strong light. Alongside the new look, Mega Ampharos will be receiving a new type – now a dual Electic/Dragon type Pokemon – a unigue type combination only shared by the legendary Pokémon Zekrom

 

 

Mega Absol

When Absol undergoes Mega Evolution, it becomes Mega Absol. The increase energy that courses through Absol’s body upon Mega Evolving makes its fur stand on end, giving it the appearance of wings.

Nintendo has confirmed that Mega Absol will receive the suberb ability “Magic Bounce “. A normal Absol was fortunate to be blessed with a high attack stats – a Mega Absol will receive a boost in attack and speed making this Mega Evolution a potent Pokémon for competitive play.

 

Mega Mawile

When Mawile undergoes Mega Evolution, its trademark huge mouth has multiplied, and now there are two great maws to contend with! It seems that Mega Mawile is able to control each maw independently.

Mega Evolution is a blessing for Mawile. Nintendo has confirmed that Mega Mawile will get a sharp boost in special defence and defence stat. With the new ability of “Huge power”- Mega Mawile will not be underestimated in offensive play. With the type combination of Steel/Fairy combined with the defence boost – Mega Mawile will be the perfect counter to dragon Pokémon.

 

Mega Mewtwo

At last, the truth behind the new Pokémon that so closely resembles Mewtwo is clear. It’s a Mewtwo that has achieved Mega Evolution, a new kind of Pokémon Evolution!

Apart from the aesthetic change – Mega Mewtwo will receive a hefty boost in the Special attack stat. In addition to complement Mega Mewtwo’s power, this new form will be able to use a powerful special attack Psystrike.

 

Mega Lucario

When Lucario Mega Evolves, it becomes Mega Lucario. This Pokémon becomes even larger than it was before it Mega Evolved. With both high attack and special attack, Lucario is able to battle in a way.

The powerhouse that was Lucario in Diamond and Pearl just got more powerful. Mega Lucario gains the ability “Adaptability” which gives Lucario an extra level of offensive prowess. With a diverse moveset and powerful STAB’s in Aura Sphere or Close combat – I don’t see Lucario losing its popularity.

 

Mega Blaziken

Blazikenite, the item needed to Mega Evolve Blaziken, cannot be obtained through normal gameplay in Pokémon X or Pokémon Y.

Mega Blaziken is an event Mega evolution by that I mean it cannot be achieved through normal gameplay. The special item Blazikenite is need to achieve Mega Blaziken. Nintendo has confirmed a stat boost in Attack and Special attack and as well the ability “Speed Boost” which is Blaziken’s dream world ability. Mega Blaziken is posed to be an offensive monster.

Leaked Pokemon

Mega Garchomp

Mega Garchomp was revealed by Coro Coro magazine. Not much is know about the stat boosts but Mega Garchomp will gain the ability Sandforce which raises the power of Rock, Ground and Steelt type moves by 30% in sandstorms.

Mega Mewtwo X form

Coro Coro magazine has revealed that Mewtwo will have a second Mega Evolution but will be available only by playing Pokemon X. Mega Mewtwo X form is a dual Psychic/Fighting type Pokemon. Mega Mewtwo X form stat boosts are unknow.
