Why Nintendo is the biggest threat to my wallet come the holiday season

Quality release for Nintendo  between the 3DS and Wii U during the first half year of 2014 has been few and far between.  From the top of my head –  Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, Bravely Default, Kirby Triple Deluxe and  Mario Golf: World Tour being the highlights of the year so far from  a Nintendo fan perspective.  Not very impressive to say the least (in terms of quantity).

Luckily, the second half of the year is looking much better, in fact light years ahead by comparison. As a gamer, whom primarily plays on Nintendo consoles the holiday season will be nirvana – an explosion of pure awesomeness and bliss in the purest form. Unfortunately, while we be basking in the gaming orgy of quality titles, are wallets will be bleeding rupees like there is no tomorrow. Games will be releasing one after another – Nintendo relentless and adamant in the pursuit of our dear money. What makes things worse, is that the Big N knows damn well we will fork it over for these sure-fire masterpieces. While we are satisfied – our wallets are really going to hurt.

The Nintendo 3DS had a monster year of sublime games last year. Looking back at the year that was 2013 – Nintendo was in superb form with a killer lineup that comprised of Luigi’s Mansion Dark Moon, Fire Emblem Awakening, the Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and Pokemon X&Y. Coming from such enormous highs, it is understandable that 2014 3DS line-up will be less than stellar by comparison. Fortunately for us (unfortunate for our wallets), the 3DS will be ending with a bang – with a nice one two punch in the form of Super Smash Bros For 3DS and Pokemon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire. For any 3DS owner – these two titles are certain must have game for your dear handheld. Plus there will be a plethora of other great titles to purchase such as Fantasy Life, Phoenix Wright Vs Ace Attorney and much more from 3rd party partners. The 3DS is still a monster money making machine for Nintendo.

On the other hand, Wii U owners are in serious danger in becoming broke by the end of the holiday season. The assault of games from Nintendo is intimidating, with the sheer thought of buying all of them cause nightmares. There are Hyrule Warriors in September, October marks Bayonnetta 2 and the holiday featuring Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and Super Smash Bros For Wii U – so many games to purchase, and I simply cannot ignore any one of them. And let’s not forget about the Amiibo’s launching alongside Super Smash Bros For Wii U. Being an avid Smash Bros fan and a sucker for all things Nintendo –  I must have all those Amiibo’s for collecting purposes. I just must…

I’ve calculated a rough estimation on how much cash I will be blowing on video games during the second half of 2014, which rounds off at aus $500. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that is a lot of money, especially, considering that Australia is an expensive place to live in. Being a gamer donw under is an expensive hobby.

As an owner of both a Wii U and  a 3DS, Nintendo will be spoiling me with quality games, unfortunately, purchasing all these games will take a massive toll on my wallet. I suppose the moral of the story, and the whole point of the article, is that you need to start saving your pennies now. You do not want to miss out the sublime games releasing at the end of the year.
