Why The Wonderful 101 is my Game of the year
It has been a wonderful year for Nintendo fans regardless whether you own a Wii U or 3DS. Nintendo has delivered so many incredible games this year for their fans – so much so – that it has become an incredibly difficult task for myself to select my personal game of the year. With a list that consists of Lego City: Undercover, Pokemon X&Y, Fire Emblem Awakening, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, Pikmin 3, The Legend of Zela: A Link Between Worlds, The Wonderful 101 and finally Super Mario 3D World – selecting the best game from a lineup with sublime pedigree is difficult. I hope you can understand my dilemma of picking a game of the year.
In all honesty my game of the year choice comes down to 4 games: Fire Emblem: Awakening, Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101 and Super Mario 3D World. Obviously the easy choice would be picking Super Mario 3D World whom has the highest Metacritic score and no doubt a deserving game. However, if I chose the game solely on the criteria of the highest Metacritic score then it would not be my game of the year, but Metacritics Game of the Year.
I don’t believe the game of the year has to be the outright best game. I tend to look at things with a different perspective. Personally, I think the game of the year should be your most memorable game you played this year. When you look back at 2013 – What game would you instantly remember? What game made a lasting impression? What game resonated with you with the most this year?
My heart tells me that this honor must go to The Wonderful 101 despite Super Mario 3D World being an overall more polish game. The Wonderful 101 is one of the most refreshing and exhilarating titles I have played in recent memories. What I most loved about The Wonderful 101 is that oozes with personality and style – it has wonderful humor and never takes itself overly seriously. In terms of gameplay – Wonderful 101 is like no other game. The unique mechanic unite morphs allows you to create massive weapons to take on massive hordes of enemies. The Wonderful 101 moves a million miles an hour – it is a constant whirlwind of excitement - the game is relentless and unrelenting -it throws challenge after challenge, set piece after set piece – an enthralling game from start to finish. The Wonderful 101 contains my most memorable gaming moments of the year. I simply cannot forget that incredible giant robot punchout fight or the Dieku Orowchee boss battle or the many fights with Prince Vorkken. The last hours of the game is simply breathtaking – a sight that is truly to behold.
The Wonderful 101 dares to be different maybe to its detriment (referring to its commercial success), but its uniqueness deserve to be recognized. Sure the game is rough around the edges and has some glaring flaws, but I had so much fun with the game and it delivered many incredible gaming moments. When I look back at the games I have played throughout 2013, without a doubt The Wonderful 101 is my favorite out of all them. Thus, I have to be true to my heart and declare the Wonderful 101 my game of the year.
