I was so incredibly surprised when Zelda was announced as a returning veteran for Smash Bros. I was starting to give in to the rumors from others that she wouldn’t be returning and well I’m very happy to see those rumors disproved. I actually main Toon Link in Brawl, but Zelda is easily one of my top 5 characters in the game. I have to say she looks positively stunning on the Wii U version of the game. The level of detail on her model just goes to show that the Wii U is a more powerful console then you might think. All of her poses are nice to look at and I’m very excited to play as her again in the next Smash Bros.

As for the Phantom. There’s so many ways to look at this. Listing a few:

    1) Its simply an assist Trophy and Sakurai is having fun at our expense.

    2) One of Zelda’s special moves now summons a Phantom.

    3) Zelda summons/transforms into the Phantom and you now control it instead of Zelda. This move replaces Sheik.

If this is actually just an assist trophy then that is a terrible shame. The Phantom is even colored pink like when they are under Zelda’s control. But all in all I wouldn’t be too sad or surprised. I’m simply happy Zelda is in this game so it’s not a huge let down for me if she doesn’t have any new moves. I wouldn’t be surprised that she doesn’t have any new moves because that seems to be the same for the majority of the returning Veterans. I’d really like it if Link and Toon Link had varied special moves, but as far as I can tell thus far they seem to have all the same moves as they did in Brawl. Even though Sakurai said he didn’t want clones in this game this does still seem to be the case. I’m sure this helps speed up the development of the game so again I can understand the reasoning.

If Zelda does summon a Phantom for her side special that would be incredibly cool. The only thing we certainly know about the Phantom is that it has a large sword which it can use for a mostly horizontal slash. Does the Phantom have multiple attacks? Does the Phantom disappear after attacking? Can Zelda control when the Phantom attacks like Rosalina? There’s just too many questions and not enough answers. If I had to make a guess though I would say the Phantom stays on screen for at least a small while simply due to the amount of work put into the creation of its model.

I honestly think the most likely scenario is that this Phantom is a replacement for Zelda’s ‘Din’s Fire’ attack. This Phantom will be a new tool used to bring opponents towards Zelda so that she can use her smash attacks which are amazingly good when used on approaching aggressors.

I think her side special will summon the Phantom and it will then for a short period of time patrol around the stage (like they do in Spirit Tracks) and slash at anyone they come across. If enough time passes I’m guessing it will disappear on its own. But I’m also willing to bet that it can be defeated even sooner by attacking it’s back (again like Spirit Tracks).

Lastly there’s a lot of discussion about how summoning the Phantom grants you control of that character and that this new play style will be replacing Sheik. Honestly I think this is the least likely of scenarios. I say this mostly because of the picture of Zelda with her ‘Phantom Summoning’ pose with Link and Peach. Why isn’t the Phantom being summoned in that picture? I’d wager it’s either because the Phantom is actually just an assist trophy OR the Phantom is actually off screen further along on the stage. If you actually lose control of Zelda and play as the Phantom then why is she doing that pose in the picture? Surely she isn’t stuck doing that pose the entire time you control the Phantom? And again if you are controlling the Phantom and not Zelda then it should be impossible to make her pose for this picture.

Though I guess it is still entirely possible that even without the player controlling the Phantom the new move has replaced Sheik. Though without that layer of depth in the Phantom I think the developers removing an entire character for a single attack would be a rather silly move. You might argue that again this is a move to quicken development, but if that was the case for this situation then why create an entirely new model for an attack rather then adding another animation for Zelda? Perhaps another projectile or something to do with a harp/orcarina? Anything easier then creating the whole Phantom. Who knows.

I was thinking that the Phantom was going to be an assist trophy. However, the more i think about it, it might be her “final smash” replacing the light arrows. What are your thoughts?

I thought about it being a Final Smash for a bit, but I’d have to say I don’t think it is that.

For one Zelda isn’t glowing. Most characters are glowing throughout the duration of their Final Smash and have glowing eyes as well. Secondly the background isn’t all dark like it usually is during a Final Smash.

For those reasons I’d have to rule out that possibility. There’s always a chance that these things are being changed in this new game, but given that Wii Fit Trainer displayed these attributes I don’t think that will be the case.
