I miss the old Rare. Alongside Nintendo games – Rare games made my childhood. Banjo Kazooie, Goldeneye, Jet Force Gemini, Blast Corps, Killer Instincts Gold and lets not forget Conker’s Bad Fur Day.

Unfortunately, the modern day rare are not there former self. In fact it has been a very long time since they had a critically acclaim game.

Former Rare Staff member and Co-founder of Nyamyam Phil Tossel reveal that Nintendo was often envious of them.

Speaking to Retro  Gamer – Tossel Said:

“No, we never had the Zelda engine or any code they did! We did see an early version of Zelda and that was a big influence on Dinosaur Planet, though. Nintendo were often quite envious of us. I got the feeling they thought our games were technically and artistically superior to theirs. Miyamoto would visit regularly and I heard a rumor they redid all of the textures on Zelda after they’d seen our work on Banjo-Kazooie because our game looked better!”

I suppose when you are in a collaboration with a talented dev studio like Rare – even the Big N can jealous.
