Super Mario 3D World fails to kickstart the Wii U in Japan.

Nintendo is in dire straights right now with the Wii U. The release of Super Mario 3D World has failed to give the Wii U a significant boost in Japan, according to the latest Media Create Numbers. Super Mario 3D World debut at Number 2, only to beaten by Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13. 99,588 copies of Super Mario 3D World was sold (not including digital purchases) during the 4 days of tracking. The Numbers are respectable considering the Wii U’s install base, but it failed to give the console a spike in sales, which was needed for the holiday season.

In the tracked period, only 21,002 Wii U’s were sold in that period. For comparision sakes, 15,906 Wii U’s were sold in last weeks charts. A 5k boost after the release of key software is not good at all – especially a title where Nintendo’s hopes were bestowed upon. Until we get worldwide numbers it will be difficult to see how bad the situation is. But, it is not looking good from here.

For now, it might be appropriate to only analyze the regional situation. For starters, the country is increasingly moving towards mobile gaming, that is handhelds and smarthphones. Particulary evident with the strong 3DS sales. However, this should ring the alarm bells for Nintendo, Japan is an important market for their business and having a poor performing console is not good in any measure. My optimism for the Wii U, is slowly dying. Nintendo needs a drastic strategy evaluation for next year.

I would not give up on the WiiU just yet. The most telling event is about to transpire in a month. Christmas. The holidays is where Nintendo always shines the strongest. Nintendo sales are always higher than other gaming platforms during this time.

I expect pretty nice numbers in the US from the Black Friday sales, but when Christmas comes I expect even larger numbers in Japan and well everywhere world wide. It would be silly not to expect a huge boost. The same thing happened for the 3DS after the release of Super Mario 3D Land.
