Red Dead Redemption is my game of the generation. What is yours?

(Before you read the article, please be aware there are spoilersif you have not played Red Dead Redemption then you should immediately stop reading and play the game :P )

For many Wii U owners, the 7th generation is already over as the arrival of the new Nintendo console marked the dawn of the new generation of gaming consoles. Personally, most games I will purchase from this point on will be for my Wii U and the secondary gaming console of my choice (most likely the PS4). Effectively, the 7th generation is over, so it is a perfect time to declare my personal game of the generation.

The process of selecting the game of the generation is subjective. Each gamer will have their individual choice of game with their own unique reasons. Personally, the game that brings the fondest memory when I look back at the generation is the game of the generation. In 5 years’ time when I reminisce about the 7th gen, what game will I remember the most?  What game instils nostalgia? What game best represents the experiences had in the generation. For the 7th gen, that game has to be Red Dead Redemption.

Red Dead Redemption is the amalgamation of superb game design and sublime storytelling. Everything you want in a game is here. Beautiful large open world, excellent writing, fantastic voice acting and well-designed missions – quality seeps into every aspect of the game. I even loved the DLC; Undead Nightmare is the greatest piece of DLC in gaming history. Zombies and Cowboys are epic in so many levels.

Nothing can beat the feeling of being a bad-ass former outlaw riding across the Wild West with a rifle in hand and lasso on the other.  Red Dead Redemptions is the closest thing to reliving the life during the American frontier.  There is no one better than Rockstar when it comes to creating a virtual world.

The most endearing aspect of Red Dead Redemption is the finale. The final hours of Red Dead Redemption are sublime – beautifully built up and emotional impactful. Watching John Marston getting mowed down by bullets left me shocked and awed. The image stayed with me long after finishing the game. Very few games have made such an impact, the last games to do so was Wind Waker, Mass Effect 3 and more recently Xenoblade Chronicles.

The 7th generation produced many quality games. Super Mario Galaxy, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Bioshock, Bioshock Infinite, Mass Effect Trilogy, Uncharted 2, Skyrim, Xenoblade Chronicles and Metal Gear Solid 4. There are many other superb games but too extensive to list. Maybe your game of the generation is one of the upcoming games. The Last of Us? Grand Theft Auto 5?

Great choice, but I’d personally go with Fallout 3. Fallout New Vegas is a close 2nd. Bugs aside I enjoyed the Fallout games SO much that I still own them, and I’m that guy that sells/trades ganes when I’m done with them 99% of the time. Great characters, great stories, fun combat. Everything was so well done, aside from some normal Bethesda bugs.

Good games, but the bugs in F3 were just absolutely diabolical, so for that reason alone its enough to disregard it for me! And I’m sorry the combat was fucking TERRIBLE (what fucking games do u play) and playing in 3rd person mode was equally as bad, or worse! Bethesda really need to get their shit together the arrogant shits!

I play pretty much anything that looks fun, which is a lot. The aiming was a bit tedious in FO3, but the story and overall experience was just so fun. There’s also so much to do that I always find something new if I take some time and just do some exploring.

I agree that Bethsoft needs to get their shit together on the bug front though. Skyrim wasn’t so bad there, so I’m hoping the next Fallout will be better in basically every way. Some better shooting mechanics, more weapons, and (as they always seem to) improve characters and story telling even more.

Their next one will be spectacular! They’re not gonna make the same mistake with Sony as they did last time, no one is gonna make that mistake again! Whatever the next game is, it’s gonna be epic! If FO3 was done properly, it would have been one of the greatest games ever made! The setting and soundtrack was fucking awesome!

I would probably have to agree…..Really loved the Uncharted series, but they were a bit too ‘green’ and wholesome for me to say they were my faves. Usually GTA always takes the cake for me, but IV was a major disappointment – so yeah Red Dead is probably my choice – TOP GAME! (Michael) Anyone manage to get a visit from Lucifer himself? If you haven’t you haven’t played enough :)

lucifer? damn i need to pop in my copy then

      • John

Yeah – I think you may need to finish all the side characters stories – at least the one with the old man in the bayou – after that, if you go camping in the wilderness Evil will approach ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9L5Jnq5MYs

Fantastic summary of an amazing game… I thought I was the only one who would’ve picked Red Dead as my favourite gaming experience of the last 5 years or so! It’s such an immersive world I even let my five year old daughter hop on a horse and run around the countryside! Great article and a good conversation starter. Now we just need a sequel for the next gen!

I’d say halo 3 was my favourite. 4 was a close second.(No i am not a microsoft fanboy. Just think the franchise is the greatest of its genre.)
