When I hear the name “Ampharos” a feeling of nostalgia always fills my heart. It comes at no surprise that Ampharos is one of my favorite Pokemon of the second generation. While Ampharos had good stats it certain category it could not compete in fierce battles. Thankfully, Game Freaks somewhat remedied the problem with Mege evolutions.

Mega Ampharos is a good upgraded from the normal with respectable boosts in Special attack and defenses. Unfortunately, Mega Ampharos still a slow bugger.

Regardless, the new type combination Electric/Dragon and ability Molder Breaker are good assets for Mega Ampharos.

Agility Sweeper Mega Ampharos @ Ampharosite

EVS: 252 Special attack, 252 Speed, 4 HP

Ability: Mold Breaker, Nature: Modest/ Timid

  • Agility
  • Thunderbolt
  • Focus Blast
  • Dragon Pulse

Mega Ampharos has terrible speed for sweeping. To remedy the problem Agility is the perfect move that raises the speed stat by two stages. Assuming you select Timid – one agility allows you to outspeed Pokemon with 130 base speed or under that does not have a choice scarf. The Mega Ampharos Special attack should be adequate for a late game sweep. Thunderbolt and Dragon Pulse are great Stabs. Focus Blast is essential to combat Blissey and Snorlax.

Special defensive Faires will pose a problem, so it might be a good idea to have an ally member to take on fairies.

Cotton Spore Ampharos @ Ampharosite

252 Special attack, 252 HP,  4 Speed.

Ability: Mold Breaker, Nature: Modest

  • Cotton Spore
  • Volt Switch
  • Dragon Pulse
  • Focus Blast

Mega Ampharos excellent typing Dragon/Electric and excellent bulk should give him plenty of opportunities to switch in and force a switch. For example the common bulky waters would be a perfect example. The strategy is simple, get Mega Ampharos in the battle use cotton spore on a predicted switch lowering the opponent speed. Volt Switch to scout the opponents move while dishing out damage. Dragon Pulse and Focus Blast are for coverage.
